Exploring the effectiveness of implementing ‘’QUIZIZZ’’ to enhance grammar learning for beginners in an EFL Classroom

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of using Quizizz as a game-based learning platform to enhance grammar acquisition among beginner students in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. Based on Brown’s (2001) perspectives on teaching listening and reading, and also Thornbury's (1999) deductive grammar approach, the research explores how integrating Quizizz can influence learners’ engagement and understanding of grammar structures used as an activity and the students’ point of view about it. The study was conducted as a case study within the PIBID program at Ginásio Pernambucano School with young learners at the A1 and A2 levels, applying both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data collection took place over three lessons, during which students participated in contextualized grammar listening and reading activities and used Quizizz during the classes. After the lessons, a questionnaire with both closed and open-ended questions was administered to know students' perception of the experience. The analysis of students’ quiz results and questionnaire answers showed a positive perception of Quizizz's role in supporting grammar learning. The results showed that Quizizz makes grammar instruction more dynamic and enjoyable, especially when it is integrated into traditional grammar teaching.
